TIPS FOR HIRING A TREE SERVICE PROFESSIONAL

There are a range of tree service companies out there. Here is a summary of a Rutgers Cooperative Extension (pdf file) factsheet on hiring tree professionals.

Pre-selection questions:

• Ask for proof of the following insurance coverage:
  • Personal Liability
  • Property Liability
  • Workmen's Compensation

• Verify any certification and memberships in professional organizations

• Ask for and check references from previous customers 

Once you select a tree professional:

• Review the contract
  • It should include:
    • Beginning and end dates of proposed work
    • Details of tree work-- clearly identifying the trees to be worked on.
    • Standards of pruning
    • Clean up work (disposal of debris)
    • How any firewood and stumps will be handled
    • A cost estimate for the work
    • An hourly rate for any unexpected or additional work
